Test 7 Section 4 #7

This is a “which of the following statements is true” question, so we should probably read each choice. If you aren’t in a super rush, it’s probably prudent to actually eliminate 3 of the 4 choices to make sure of your answer, rather than just picking one that seems true.

A) I like this! The line of best fit has a negative slope—as the distances on the x-axis get bigger, the densities on the y-axis are definitely getting smaller.

B) Nope. This is the opposite of what choice A said, and we already said that one looked good.

C) Nope. A couple points to consider here. Look at distances of 0.4 and 0.8, for example. We have points close to both those distances, and their densities are both between 5 and 5.5. In fact, if you look at distances of 0.4 and 2.4 (6 times as far) you’re still not seeing the density cut in half.

D) This is no good. The fact that the line of best fit is so close to the dots in this scatterplot indicates that there is a relationship between the variables on the axes (density and distance from sun).
