I did it the hard and long way
strip off the exponents

a+b=12 a-b = 3 a = 12-b a = 3+b
b =4.5, a = 7.5

7.5^2 = 56.25 = a^2
4.5^2 =20.25 = b^2
a^2-b^2 = 36
put back the c
c^36
