What distinguishes the paintings of this artist from HER CONTEMPORARIES ARE the combination of vibrant colors with striking patterns.

a) her contemporaries are

b) her contemporaries is

c) those of her contemporaries are

d) those of her contemporaries is

e) that of her contemporaries are

I chose choice c but the actual answer is choice d. I’m not sure why that I am incorrect.

Two things going on here. First is the comparison error: you have to compare the painting of the artist in question to THE PAINTINGS of her contemporaries. Seems like you had that part down if you picked C.

The other issue is verb agreement. The subject of the “are” in choice C or the “is” in choice D is “the combination.” That’s singular, so you need “is.”
