If x^2/3=y, what does x^4 equal in terms of y?

(A)y^2
(B)y^8/3
(C)y^3
(D)y^5
(E) y^6

Please use parentheses when you submit a question like this. Technically, you said \dfrac{x^2}{3}, even though I’m pretty sure you meant x^\frac{2}{3}. Anyway…

First raise each side to the 3rd power to get rid of the fractional exponent:

\left(x^\frac{2}{3}\right)^3=y^3

x^2=y^3

Now square both sides to get to x^4:

\left(x^2\right)^2=\left(y^3\right)^2

x^4=y^6
