can you please explain number 5 and 7 on Absolute Value

Sure thing. Here’s #5:

For this one, first subtract 1 to get the absolute value on one side by itself:

|x-9|=6.5

From there, you have two possibilities:

  • x-9=6.5, in which case x=15.5, or
  • x-9=-6.5. in which case x=2.5

Because you’re asked for the minimum value of x, you go with 2.5.

And here’s #7:

For this one, most people will choose just to try each choice until one doesn’t work. Once you get to one that doesn’t work, you’re done! I’ll start with A:

h(3)<|h(3)|\\2(3)-10<|2(3)-10|\\-4<|-4|\\-4<4

Choice A is true–let’s try choice B:

h(1)=|h(1)|\\2(1)-10=|2(1)-10|\\-8=|-8|\\-8=8

Obviously that’s NOT true, so B is the answer.
