I’ve been very slowly working on an Essay Guide. So frustratingly slowly. The plan is for it to be an ebook (and maybe, if people really like it, a print book at some point). And it’s still very far from being done, but it’s getting to a point where I think it’s not a waste (more…)
I get a lot of emails about this, so I thought it would be a good idea to create a post I could update as things develop. I’ll get back to posting challenge questions soon. 🙂 Since I published the Math Guide at the end of last year, I’ve been looking into ways to sell it (more…)
Robin Hill Park (Jon Forster) / CC BY-SA 2.0 What an annoying weekend I had. It’s all my own poor planning, but the Math Guide went temporarily out of stock this weekend. Hopefully, everything will be back to normal by tomorrow, which means I can get right back to giving books away! This weekend challenge (more…)
Katelyn’s 10 essay (in the comments) Because even though you only get one score, your essay can fail or succeed along 5 axes. The above is something I’m working on to try to help people understand a little better how, even if their grammar is perfect, for example, their essay score might not improve. It (more…)
One of the things you should be doing this summer if you want to improve your critical reading skills is making sure to read some sophisticated writing (newspapers, magazines, books) every day. You should be doing your best to understand the arguments made (if possible, by discussing what you read with others), and you should (more…)
Honestly, this makes me really nervous because I have no idea how it’s is going to work and also because I hate looking at a moving image of my face while I talk—my mouth moves weirdly—but I’m gonna dive in. So mark your calendars, homies. Monday, June 11 at 8 PM EST: SAT prep Google+ (more…)
Trinity College Library in Dublin, Ireland. It’s pretty. Source. The whole reason I started this site is that I believe good test prep should be available to everyone who wants it, regardless of geography or income. Yeah, I sell a book. And yeah, it’s not the cheapest test prep book out there. Because I think it’s (more…)
Quick note: the Math Guide is now available through Google Play as an eBook. You can read it on your computer, your iPad, any Android device, etc. It’s cheaper than the physical book, of course, and you don’t have to wait for it to ship to you once you buy it. So that’s cool. Still, if (more…)
Special nerd note: #20 in Section 4 is pretty much my favorite Guesstimate question of all time. The College Board’s latest The Official SAT Study Guide with DVD is exactly the same as the 2nd edition, except that it comes with a DVD containing a bit of extra content. I can see the utility in the SAT timer it includes, (more…)
This breakdown is meant to help you analyze and categorize your mistakes after you’ve taken Practice Test 3 in the Blue Book. The whole idea is that the best thing you can do to improve your score is to understand your weaknesses, and then drill the hell out of them to make them strengths. Click (more…)
This is straight out of the PWN the SAT Math Guide, except I’ve deleted the page number references and inserted links to certain techniques. View the breakdown of Blue Book Test 1 here. § p # Techniques and concepts Diff. 2 452 1 Patterns 1 2 452 2 Ratios 1 2 453 3 Read the (more…)
I broke down every Blue Book test when I wrote the Math Guide. In the book there are page numbers instead of links, obviously. The idea here is that you can take a test, and use the results from that test to really identify some weaknesses. Then you drill those weaknesses before taking another test. (more…)
I designed the Math Guide to be read (and worked through) cover-to-cover alongside the Blue Book, but it’s never been my philosophy that test prep is a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. You don’t have to work through the book linearly to have a successful experience with it. Jump all over the place, if that suits you. (more…)
Things have been quiet here, but blowing up over at the Q&A site. Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten how to write longer posts. I was just on vacation. I’m back now. And I promise to stop peppering you with posts about my book. After this one. While I was gone, some cool things happened that (more…)
UPDATE: The second edition of my Math Guide is now available for purchase at Amazon.com! Read up on the new edition here. The first edition is now out of print, although some residual copies might be available for a while. The rest of this page serves as an archive and will no longer be updated. (more…)
